In February 2012, it was confirmed that the National Stadium in Tokyo would be reconstructed. The project would require 100 billion yen. It will upgrade for the 2019 Rugby World Cup before hosting the 2020 Olympic Games. The plan invited many world architect and designers to compete the New National Stadium launch.
In November 2012, Zaha Hadid Architects won the design after a long selection to fight 46 competitors. However, a second design competition was launched in 2015 because of the inflated building cost. The new design winner was Kengo Kuma.
The plan initially included dismantling design of the original National Stadium. The capacity would be expanded into 80,000 to accommodate super huge event such as the Summer Olympic Games. However, the second design changed a little bit for suppressing the cost of the reconstruction.
With the changes on the design, the National Stadium of Tokyo would not make the event of 2019 Rugby World Cup in Tokyo. The capacity on the new design is decreased to be interchangeable between 60,000 to 80,000. It depends on the games; the stadium will be a smart arena mirroring the design of Stage de France. The 2020 Summer Olympic Games will show a surprising moment of opening and closing ceremony in the new Stadium. Also, there will be new games and additional games which are all awaited.
