The clamour in the Congress for vice president Rahul Gandhi to take over as president of the party will increase as soon as he returns from overseas with ailing mother Sonia Gandhi, a party functionary told The Hindu.

The ailing Congress chief didnt campaign in the February-March Assembly elections in five states. "Thanks to all the countrymen and Congress people for their good wishes", party's spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said in a tweet.

When asked about the appointment of a new Kerala Congress chief following the recent resignation of V M Sudheeran, Singhvi said, "I do not think that two weeks is such an alarming period of time you are making it sound". (But) let me assure you: "very, very clear structural and categorical and emphatic issues will be discussed very soon".

Singhvi, who was addressing the media at the party briefing on Friday, also said Sonia is on way to fast recovery.

The Congress VP Rahul Gandhi is scheduled to attend Parliament proceedings on Monday.

The Patiala House Court heard the National Herald case against the Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi for allegedly conspiring to cheat in a land deal.

The Congress president was therefore away when the BJP came back to power in Uttar Pradesh, in a thundering landslide victory, also winning Uttarakhand and managing to cobble together coalitions headed by it in Goa and in Manipur. The accused also opposed Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Subramanian Swamy's plea which sought the summoning of the witnesses.
