Johnson faces a major group in Match Play

Rory McIlroy faces a tough road if he wants to advance out of his group in the Dell Technologies Match Play. He was No. 1 in the world for almost a year until Dustin Johnson overtook him a month ago. The 27-year-old Irishman won the event two years ago in between Day's two wins.

For the first three days of the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play, the 64-player field competes in 16 four-player groups, with each player getting three matches in each group. Johnson, who has won on his last two starts, has been placed in a group with PGA Championship title holder Jimmy Walker, twice major victor Martin Kaymer and former US Open champion Webb Simpson. His best finish in what was then the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship was fourth in 2010 at Dove Mountain in Arizona, where he knocked off David Toms, Anders Hansen of Denmark, Tim Clark of South Africa and Oliver Wilson of England before things fell apart.

Spieth, seeded fifth, was the second major player to lose Wednesday at Austin Country Club.
