Jose Mourinho has featured Rooney in only nine Premier League games since he became United manager in June past year. Knowing him, he's the type of footballer that would like to play every minute of every day.

His contract runs out in 2019 but he could well leave at the end of this season. While United will get one of the club's highest paid players off the wage bill and free up funds for summer transfer targets.

Manchester United's Wayne Rooney could be edging closer to a return to Everton.

If Lukaku stays on Merseyside, Rooney could prove to be the best forward he's partnered with.

The Independent claim that a move back to Goodison Park, where he left for Old Trafford in 2004, is the 31-year-old's first choice.

That is sure to alert clubs in the Premier League, too, with former club Everton expressing an interest.

West Ham United are interested in snapping up Wayne Rooney from Manchester United in the summer, according to Sky Sports News HQ, a switch which has not been ruled out.

West Ham have now been added to the list of potential suitors, with the East Londoners keen to bolster their attacking options.

This move would arguably make sense for all parties.

The Independent say that since then a prospective offer from Everton was being seriously considered by Rooney and that the Merseysiders have been attempting a move "for a few months".

West Ham would also land a marquee signing which they seem to be desperately seeking.

That's because Rooney still has the quality that can benefit and help this Hammers squad.

"It's an exciting time at the club and I want to remain a part of it".
