Candidates to replace Rooney as England captain revealed by Southgate

Former Arsenal forward Lukas Podolski is set to skipper world champions Germany in his 130th and final worldwide appearance in Dortmund, and the 31-year-old believes a lack of managerial longevity is the principal reason for England's consistent underachievement.

"I have to balance what is right for Wednesday and what is right for Sunday as well, but we will keep monitoring that".

His first significant act was to sideline Rooney, four months after the 31-year-old had to apologise for being pictured looking the worse for wear alongside wedding guests at the England team hotel.

In Rooney's absence, Southgate has indicated he intends to allocate the captain's armband on a match-by-match basis.

David Moyes believes Jermain Defoe's return to the England squad could provide a positive knock-on effect to Sunderland's chances of avoiding relegation from the Premier League.

Speaking to the press ahead of Wednesday's clash against Germany, Defoe said: "When I missed out on the last World Cup squad it was hard news to accept".

"It was a very powerful message", the Southampton midfielder said.

For too long the Three Lions have fallen flat at major tournaments, failing to make it out of their group at the last World Cup before bowing out to minnows Iceland at Euro 2016. "It highlighted the highs and lows of a career and the ambitions that he sees for us".

"And the other main reason is that in 2004 German football really changed course and started to develop and it culminated in the 2014 World Cup".

The importance of global football has not been lost on the veteran.
