Tournament organisers confirmed in their statement that Djokovic was battling an elbow problem.

It's Kyrgios' second victory in as many weeks over Djokovic, after an upset triumph in the quarter-finals at Acapulco.

Djokovic described it as "shocking" that he would have to miss the Miami event, which was set to start this week, where he won his first Masters event before making his ascent towards the top of the world rankings. The newspaper reports Djokovic travelled from Indian Wells to Monaco on Friday to have the injury assessed by his doctor.

The Serb has been dealing with nagging injuries for some time, most notably when he received medical timeouts at the U.S. Open and withdraw last fall from an event he has dominated in Beijing.

A loss to the Serbian in the Qatar Open final as well as a round-of-16 exit at the Australian Open at the hands of Mischa Zverev were seen as surprise results for the 29-year-old.
