"The Prince's senior advisor, who attended the White House on his behalf, said in a statement that the meeting was a "huge success" that marked a historic turning point in the bilateral relations [between the] two countries".

The countries he visited are some of the world's biggest importers of oil from Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia claims almost 770 people were killed in the incident, but officials at Iran's Hajj and Pilgrimage Organization say about 4,700 people, including over 460 Iranian pilgrims, lost their lives.

The visit is expected to push the Saudi economy to further heights, notably after the signing of a series of economic, trade and investment deals by both sides, he said.

Deputy Chinese Foreign minister Zhang Ming said President Xi Jinping and King Salman are old friends and practical cooperation between China and Saud Arabia has already made major achievements and has huge potential.

Saudi Arabia has long presented its invasion of Yemen as being about the Shi'ites there being an "Iranian proxy", though evidence suggests no real Iranian support for the Houthi movement before the invasion, and very limited support, mostly to spite the Saudis, afterwards.

China has had to tread a careful line, though, as it also has close relations with Iran.

In a statement released on Friday evening, the Hajj and Pilgrimage Organization said the necessary conditions for the dispatch of more than 85,000 Iranian pilgrims to this year's Hajj have been met.

The joint statement said both China and Saudi Arabia stressed their support for Yemen's legal government.
