The contract offered by the Jets was significantly more than the one New England had on the table ($8.75 million per year), so Hightower visited with the team. After more than a week of uncertainty, Dont'a Hightower chose to re-sign with the New England patriots. He received a four-year contract for $43.5 million, with $19 million guaranteed, his agents confirmed to The Tennessean.
Just two days after the free-agent linebacker re-signed with the Patriots (and the Steelers media quickly dismissed him as "overrated"), the Jets are using a media mouthpiece of their own to give their own pitiful version of "We didn't want him anyway". Hightower has never missed a postseason game with the Patriots.
They allowed Hightower to test his value on the free agent market.
The strategy seemed to backfire as Dont'a Hightower didn't get much interest from other teams as he would have expected.
According to a PFT report, the Jets were not cofmortable offering Hightower a contract after giving him a physical. The 27-year-old has emerged as one of the most complete linebackers in football and saved the Patriots season with a huge strip sack of Matt Ryan in Super Bowl LI.
With the recent signing of Dont'a Hightower, the New England Patriots further solidified their status as the favorites to win the Super Bowl again next year.
