Based on a 2012 graphic novel The Coldest City, the film stars Theron as Lorraine Broughton, an MI6 assassin who must navigate her way through Berlin to take down an espionage ring; It also features Sofia Boutella, Toby Jones, John Goodman, and a almost unrecognizable James McAvoy (Seriously, I had to look up who it was when I watched), as well as a script by 300 writer Kurt Johnstad. Described as "equal parts spycraft, sensuality and savagery, willing to deploy any of her skills to stay alive on her impossible mission", according to the official description. The film is set to debut at SXSW this weekend, so look out for our impressions in the coming days.
The film is directed by David Leitch of John Wick fame and the upcoming Deadpool 2.
It's worth pointing out that this is not John Wick with a woman, but a totally different thing.
Fittingly, people immediately compared Theron in Atomic Blonde to Keanu Reeves in the John Wick movies. While she's done blockbuster action before - notably in Æon Flux and Mad Max: Fury Road - this could be her best showcase yet.
Atomic Blonde is based on the One Press graphic novel The Coldest City, a title which the movie was moving under when production started previous year. Kurt Johnstad wrote the screenplay.
Fans of the comic will see that it is coming to the screen with a fairly faithful adaptation.
Directed by David Leitch and starring Charlize Theron, James McAvoy, Sofia Boutella, Toby Jones, and John Goodman, Atomic Blonde blasts into theaters on July 28, 2017.
