U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement took Romulo Avelica-Gonzalez, 48, away from his screaming daughter on February 28 for being an undocumented immigrant. The ICE officials, who wore police jackets, took the 48-year-old father into custody as he dropped his girls off at school in Highland Park on Tuesday.
"My dad always takes my little sisters to school", Avelica-Gonzalez's 19-year-old daughter Jocelyn Avelica told LAist.
Mr Avelica-Gonzalez is reportedly being deported to Mexico because of a DUI conviction, which dates from nearly 10 years ago.
According to an ICE spokesperson, Avelica-Gonzalez - who has been living in the US for 20 years and has four kids - was arrested because he has a DUI conviction from 2009 and an outstanding deportation order from 2014. When he did, the officers immediately arrested him with his 13-year-old daughter and wife still in the vehicle.
Rica-Gonzalez, an undocumented man with four US -born children, was arrested by immigration officials while dropping his kids off at school.
In the video police tell the family that they will help get their auto home as Avelica-Gonzalez's wife does not drive.
Although Trump gave a speech to Congress on Tuesday night in which he emphasized the ongoing ICE deportation raids are ridding our country of criminals and drug dealers, there are several stories making headlines that tell another story. It is unclear what drew ICE's attention to Avelica-Gonzalez.
Academia Avance, the Highland Park charter school where Avelica-Gonzalez was detained, quickly rallied community support for the family. "Misleading practices like these undermine the good faith and spirit of cooperation that is so integral to our city's safety and security", Garcetti said in a statement to LAist. '"And how do we move forward?' We want to be able to find resources to help this family go through this process".
Avelica-Gonzalez, the father of four US citizens, was detained over a DUI conviction almost 10 years ago and a two decade-old incident involving an incorrect registration sticker, according to a local ABC affiliate.
