Detroit Lions secondary shuts down Drew Brees in big victory

The Lions have won and covered the spread in six of their last seven games to get to 7-4 on the year and against the spread. They have a two-game lead in the NFC North, with only four games to play. Detroit's defense has been solid as of late, holding opponents under 20 points in three straight games and five straight to 20 or less. TJ Jones caught 10 passes in 10 games previous year and was one of the team's final cuts in training camp. The unit has some injury concerns as DE Ezekiel Ansah (ankle) is questionable and LB Tahir Whitehead (knee) is out today.

Cooks - who expressed his frustration last week after being targeted zero times in 45 snaps - led the Saints with seven catches for 73 yards. He finished 30 for 42 for 341 yards with two touchdowns.

The Saints, who honored their all-50th team at halftime Sunday, will play at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers next Sunday at 3:25 in a game critical to keeping their playoff hopes alive.

It's the business end of the season and in the coming few weeks what teams do and how they perform will determine whether they make the postseason or not.

Coby Fleener dropped a pass near the goal line late in the first half, before the Saints settled for a field goal by Wil Lutz. Brees is always a monster at home, as he is averaging thirty fantasy points per game at home compared to twenty fantasy points on the road. This was the first time that Drew Brees was held with no touchdowns and three interceptions since 2012. The associated moneylines are New Orleans -208 and Detroit +173. The Lions sometimes struggle to score points. As I said when I wrote about Tyreek Hill, I'm confident that Atlanta will be able to move the ball and put up points, which will force Kansas City (yes they need to be forced) to throw the ball against a poor pass defense.

This is a big opportunity for the Lions to prove they are a real contender in the NFC, but they live a little too close to the edge, trailing in the fourth quarter of all 11 games this year. The Lions will do the opposite and try and slow the game down and limit the Saints number of possessions.
