"It is with deepest sorrow that we report we have had an officer killed this morning", West Valley City police said in a Twitter update.

The officer was reportedly standing outside his vehicle when he was struck.

Cody Brotherson, 25, a three year veteran of the West Valley City Police Department was killed in the early hours Sunday after a short pursuit.

According to investigators, the incident began when officers saw three people steal a auto from an apartment complex.

According to police, an officer observed a suspicious vehicle Sunday morning and subsequently saw three people heading towards an apartment complex.

The exact circumstances surrounding the incident have yet to be determined, although initial reports indicate the officer was struck while outside of his patrol auto.

However, the chief said it was not yet clear if the suspects deliberately hit Brotherson.

The suspects fled when officers attempted to stop the vehicle and officers initiated a pursuit, police said. "Approximately 30 seconds later, one of the responding officers called for medical help to assist the officer who had been hit".

In addition to the three arrested following the pursuit, a search was launched for possible additional suspects, police say. He is survived by a fiance, his parents and two brothers. Police officials said they expected to release more information at a press conference Sunday morning.
