Davis' big night sends No. 17 Broncos past Ball State, 52-20

Broncos quarterback Zach Terrell, a Homestead graduate, went 23 of 34 for 367 yards, with Davis getting open all night and making the big plays look routine. Gilbert, who first committed to Western Michigan before switching to Ball State, leads the MAC with 987 yards and 11 touchdowns and has four straight 100-yard games.

Gilbert's 11 rushing touchdowns lead the conference and are tied for tenth in the nation, and he's also carrying it more than anyone in the MAC with almost 23 attempts per game.

Gilbert against Western Michigan's run defense also will be one to watch, but if Terrell is able to get into a groove early, this one could get out of hand. The team debuted at No. 24 four weeks ago and moved to No. 17 when Sunday's list was released.

MI is #3 in the first College Football Playoff rankings of the season.

Western Michigan is on a roll, and Boise State's loss to Wyoming should provide plenty of motivation for coach P.J. Fleck's team. Jarvion Franklin is the team's top back with 909 yards and seven scores, but Jamauri Bogan (568 yards) is another key cog for coach P.J. Fleck.

"It's wonderful and I will not ignore it", Fleck said. "So now we've embraced this completely opposite role".

"If they truly do it for each other and they really care for each other these are the things that can start happening".

"We can't control where we're rated or the playoff poll or anything like that", Terrell said. With just over a month until the bowl assignments are handed out, the Broncos are the clear favorite to claim the Group of 5 spot in a New Year's Six bowl. "We used to play against teams like that when we weren't very good".

Western Michigan's Darius Phillips went 75 yards for his third interception return for a TD this season.

The Broncos created two more turnovers as safety Justin Ferguson pulled down his third career interception and Asantay Brown forced and recovered a fumble. Davis had one of his most dominant performances on this nationally televised stage against the Cardinals, setting a MAC single-game record with 272 yards on 12 catches.

Ball State (4-5, 1-4 MAC) was led by sophomore running back James Gilbert with 29 carries for 155 yards.

He'll be too busy dealing with other, more pressing matters. The Broncos put on a clinic against a Ball State defense that has been, for the most part, respected in the MAC. "We knew going into the game one of the glaring stats in their favor is the turnover margin". "It was an elite effort and I couldn't be prouder of this guy".

Ball State: Neu doesn't have the talent or depth to compete with a team as strong as Western Michigan, but the opportunity to play a good team certainly gives Ball State a glimpse into how much it needs to improve to compete for a conference crown.
