State of emergency declared in 2 Florida counties following severe weather, tornado

Bill Bunting with the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma, estimated 20 to 24 tornados hit from Louisiana to Florida on Tuesday.

Another person was killed in Lamar County, Mississippi, according to emergency officials. She says those numbers may go up as damage is assessed around the county. A tangled wall of tree limbs and power lines partially blocked the entrance to the apartment complex.

Gerry Deloume, 47, and her family spent the day sifting through the wreckage trying to find anything they could salvage.

The Wednesday forecast for the Carolinas calls for possible flash flooding and severe thunderstorms, including damaging winds, hail and isolated tornadoes.

The rough weather ripped through Pensacola on Tuesday evening and Scott toured the affected areas on Wednesday morning.

"Buildings B and D had their roofs ripped off", said resident Milan Smith.

Tiffany Hudson, who lives in the Moorings complex, said: "We knew there was a storm coming but we didn't know it would be this bad". Local news and television footage showed dozens of other trailers lay crumpled, flipped on their sides or pushed into or on top of other mobile homes.

Mark Anderson, in a telephone interview Tuesday with The Associated Press, said trees are toppled over and only about six to eight trailers at the Sugar Hill RV Park are left standing.

At least two deaths were reported at an RV park in St. James Parish, Louisiana.

When asked what was going on when he arrived at the scene he said: "It was chaos for the first hour".

County officials also received reports of damage in the Northpointe and Yacht Harbor subdivisions.

People in nearby neighborhoods say their own experience riding out the storm was nothing short of terrifying.

In Florida, the National Weather Service said a tornado hit Pensacola.

Waverly is located in a largely farming area about 25 miles southeast of Petersburg.

Vann Byrd of the Lamar County Emergency Management Agency says the storm damaged at least a handful of buildings. Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller says a 2-year-old child and two men, ages 50 and 26, were killed in the town of Waverly during the storm. The governor said they're working to allocate money from the state budget to help victims of both storms.

The National Weather Service had issued a tornado warning for an area in southeastern Virginia, with Doppler radar indicating a twister in Waverly.

Thousands of people were without power Wednesday morning in Pensacola after a severe storm system which spawned a tornado hit the area. Seven of them were in critical condition, he said. Dozens of other people were injured.

EF-1 rated tornadoes hit in Lincoln County, west-southwest of Bogue Chitto; in Pearl River County, southwest of Poplarville and in Green County near Avera.

The National Weather Service was surveying the damage Wednesday to determine if it was caused by a tornado.

Martin said three people were still believed to be missing but efforts to account for them were hampered because authorities didn't know how many people were at the park when the storm hit or how many people were taken to hospitals in private vehicles.
